Ingredients

  • 1 oz Aquavit
  • 1 oz coffee liqueur
  • 2 oz lemon-lime soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slice or twist - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Old Fashioned Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your Old Fashioned glass with ice cubes.
  • Add Aquavit: Pour 1 oz Aquavit over the ice.
  • Add Coffee Liqueur: Measure and pour 1 oz coffee liqueur into the glass.
  • Add Lemon-Lime Soda: Add 2 oz lemon-lime soda to the mix.
  • Stir Gently: Use a bar spoon to stir the ingredients gently.
  • Garnish: Place a lemon slice or twist into the glass for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Aquavit: If you don't have Aquavit, try using vodka with a splash of caraway or dill bitters to mimic its unique flavor. I've also used gin in a pinch; it changes the character but still works well.
  • Coffee Liqueur: Kahlua is my go-to, but any coffee liqueur will do. I've used chocolate liqueur for a different twist, which adds a rich depth.
  • Lemon-lime Soda: Any citrus soda can work here. I've used ginger ale for a spicier kick, and it pairs surprisingly well with the other ingredients.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Aquavit Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic spirit that mimics Aquavit's botanicals; these are available and do a reasonable job.
  • Coffee Liqueur Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic coffee syrup or make your own by mixing strong brewed coffee with sugar until it reaches a syrupy consistency.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
