Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila Reposado
  • 1 oz tomato juice
  • 1 oz fresh orange juice
  • ½ oz fresh lime juice
  • ½ oz grenadine
  • 7 drops of hot sauce
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 grind of black pepper
  • Ice cubes
  • Salt or Tajin - to rim the glass, optional
  • Lime wheel or slice - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Shaker
  • Cocktail Strainer
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Run a lime wedge around the rim of your highball glass, then dip in salt or Tajin (optional).
  • In the shaker, combine 1 pinch of salt, 1 grind of black pepper, 7 drops of hot sauce and ½ oz grenadine.
  • Add ½ oz fresh lime juice, 1 oz fresh orange juice and 1 oz tomato juice.
  • Finally, measure out and pour 2 oz Tequila Reposado into the shaker as well.
  • Add ice and throw: make sure all the liquid is in the bigger tin of the shaker. Then, fill this bigger tin with ice cubes. Secure the cocktail strainer on top with one hand. With the other hand, take the smaller tin. Carefully transfer the liquid from the bigger tin into the smaller one; make sure to transfer only the liquid and not the ice cubes. Then, pour the liquid back from the smaller tin into the bigger one and repeat the process (5-7 times).
  • Fill your highball glass with ice and strain the drink inside.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge (optional) and serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila: If you're out of Tequila, you can use vodka as an alternative. It will give the cocktail a different flavor profile but still work well with the other ingredients. Mezcal can also be used for a smoky, tasty twist on the original Vampiro.
  • Tomato Juice: Vegetable juice can be used as a substitute for tomato juice if needed. It adds a different depth of flavor but keeps the cocktail's savory character.
  • Grenadine: If you’re out of grenadine, you can replace it with a bit of any red berries syrup. Agave can also be a good alternative, although the drink will end up being less fruity.
  • Hot sauce: for this recipe, you can use any type of hot sauce of your liking. You can of course adjust the quantity to fit your personal taste.

Making a Pitcher of Vampiro Cocktail:

  • To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Reposado Tequila, 8 oz of tomato juice, 8 oz of fresh orange juice, 4 oz of fresh lime juice, 4 oz of Grenadine, 56 dashes of hot sauce (adjust to taste), 8 pinches of salt and 8 grinds of Black pepper.
  • Rim 8 highball glasses with salt or Tajin and fill them with ice.
  • Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher. Add ice and stir well. Strain to remove the ice, serve immediately into the prepped highball glasses, and garnish with lime wedges. Serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; these are available in the market and do a good job mimicking Tequila's flavor. You can also completely ditch the tequila, in which case you may want to add a bit more of fresh lime juice to the original recipe (try using 1 ounce and adjust from there).
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of regular Tequila, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version of Vampiro Cocktail.

Making it Vegan:

This Vampiro Cocktail recipe is vegan-friendly as it contains no animal products.
