Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 4 oz orange juice - preferably fresh
  • ½ oz strawberry syrup
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh strawberries and orange slice - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon
  • Straw optional

Instructions

  • Fill the glass with a generous amount of ice cubes.
  • Pour 2 oz Tequila into a Highball glass.
  • Fill up the glass with approx. 4 oz orange juice. Stir gently to combine.
  • Finally, measure ½ oz strawberry syrup and gently pour it inside the glass. The syrup should sink at the bottom, creating the “sunrise” effect.
  • Add a straw if you like, garnish with fresh strawberries and an orange slice and serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila: If you don't have Tequila on hand, you can use vodka as a substitute. It will give a different flavor profile but still works well with the orange and strawberry flavors.
  • Orange Juice: You can substitute orange juice with any other citrus juice, like fresh grapefruit or pineapple, for a tropical twist.
  • Strawberry Syrup: If you don't have strawberry syrup, you can make your own by mixing together fresh or frozen strawberries with simple syrup in a blender. Blend over medium speed until smooth and strain using a fine mesh strainer before transferring into a bottle. Alternatively, raspberry or cherry syrup can also be used.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; several brands are available that mimic Tequila's flavor quite well. Otherwise, you can use a bit of lemonade sweetened with agave nectar as a substitute. You can also try making your own substitute by mixing together water, a pinch of smoked salt, a splash of tonic, and a bit of agave syrup (to taste).
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

This cocktail is already vegan-friendly. Make sure to use vegan-friendly sugar when making your strawberry syrup if needed. If using store-bought syrup, check the label to ensure that it does not contain any ingredient of animal origin (some syrups are dyed with cochineal). With these small precautions taken, you are good to go and ready to prepare & enjoy a vegan Strawberry Tequila Sunrise!
