Ingredients

  • 2 oz Rye Whiskey
  • 4 oz apple cider
  • Ice cubes
  • Apple slice or cinnamon stick - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your highball glass with ice cubes.
  • Add Whiskey: Pour 2 oz Rye Whiskey over the ice.
  • Add Apple Cider: Pour approximately 4 oz apple cider into the glass.
  • Stir Gently: Use a bar spoon to stir the ingredients gently.
  • Garnish: Place an apple slice or cinnamon stick into the glass for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Whiskey: If you don't have whiskey, try using bourbon for a sweeter flavor. I've also used rum in a pinch, which adds a different but pleasant twist.
  • Apple Cider: In place of apple cider, I sometimes use apple juice with a splash of lemon juice to add some tartness. It works if you're out of cider.

Making a Pitcher of Stone Fence:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of rye whiskey and 32 oz of apple cider.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the whiskey and apple cider. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into individual ice-filled highball glasses, garnish with an apple slice or cinnamon stick, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Whiskey Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic whiskey alternative; these are available and mimic the flavor profile quite well.
  • Proceed As Usual: Replace whiskey with the non-alcoholic substitute, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
