  • ½ oz Triple Sec
  • ½ oz agave syrup
  • 1 sliced jalapeño - to taste
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime zest or jalapeño slice - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Strainer & Fine-strainer
  • Muddler
  • Margarita glass or Cocktail Glass

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Chill your cocktail glass or margarita glass with some ice.
  • Muddle Jalapeño: Muddle into a shaker 1 sliced jalapeño for spice.
  • Add Agave Syrup: Add ½ oz agave syrup to the mix.
  • Add Lime Juice: Measure and add 1 oz lime juice.
  • Add Triple Sec: Pour in ½ oz Triple Sec.
  • Add Tequila: Pour 2 oz Tequila into the shaker.
  • Prep Shaker: Fill your cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  • Shake Well: Secure the lid and shake vigorously until well chilled.
  • Strain: Fine strain the mixture into the chilled cocktail glass.
  • Garnish: Add a lime zest or jalapeño slice for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila: If you don't have Tequila, try using mezcal for a smoky twist. I've also used vodka in a pinch, though it changes the character significantly.
  • Triple Sec: Cointreau or Grand Marnier work well as substitutes if you're out of triple sec.
  • Agave Syrup: Honey or simple syrup can replace agave syrup, but agave gives the best flavor balance.

Making a Pitcher of Spicy Margarita:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all ingredients by 8. Use 16 oz of Tequila, 8 oz of lime juice, 4 oz of triple sec, and 4 oz of agave syrup.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, muddle some jalapeño slices and combine Tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and agave syrup with some ice. Stir well to blend flavors.
  • Serve: Strain into individual chilled cocktail glasses and garnish each with a lime zest or jalapeño slice.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila alternative; these are available and mimic the flavor profile quite well.
  • Triple Sec Substitute: Opt for an orange-flavored syrup or juice to replace Triple Sec's citrus notes.
  • Proceed As Usual: Follow the original steps using these non-alcoholic substitutes for a refreshing mocktail.
