Ingredients

  • 1 oz Dark Rum
  • 1 oz Campari
  • 1 oz sweet Vermouth
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange slice or twist - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Old Fashioned Glass
  • Stirring Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Make sure to chill an old fashioned glass.
  • Start by pouring 1 oz sweet Vermouth into the stirring glass.
  • Add 1 oz Campari.
  • Measure out and pour 1 oz Dark Rum into the stirring glass as well.
  • Fill the mixing glass with ice. Using a bar spoon or a long stirrer, stir well (for about 15-20 seconds). Give it a taste and stir a bit more if you feel like more dilution is necessary.
  • Replace the ice into your old fashioned glass and using the cocktail strainer, strain the drink into it over the ice.
  • Garnish with an orange peel (express it on top of the glass and drop it inside the glass or place it on the rim). Serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Dark Rum: If I don't have dark rum, I can substitute white or spiced rum. The flavor profile will change slightly, but it makes a delicious cocktail.
  • Campari: If Campari's bitter edge isn't my liking, Aperol is a good alternative. It's lighter but still brings that orange essence.
  • Sweet Vermouth: In a pinch, dry vermouth works just fine. To balance the bitterness, try to add a small splash of simple syrup.

Making a Pitcher of Rum Negroni:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, I multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 8 oz of dark rum, 8 oz of Campari, and 8 oz of sweet vermouth.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the dark rum, Campari, and sweet vermouth and stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled Old Fashioned glasses, garnish with an orange slice or twist, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Dark Rum Substitute: use a non-alcoholic dark rum substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic rum's flavor.
  • Campari Substitute: opt for a non-alcoholic aperitif or a simple syrup infused with orange peel and a touch of bitterness from gentian root or even a dash of grapefruit juice.
  • Sweet vermouth: opt for a grape juice aromatized with cloves, citrus peel and ginger.
  • Proceed As Usual: use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Check Labels: Most spirits and liqueur are vegan-friendly. However, some brands may use animal products in their production process. Always check the labels to ensure they're vegan.
