Enjoy a Rum Negroni with this easy recipe! The mix of rum, Campari, sweet vermouth, and a finishing touch of orange makes this cocktail a fall favorite.
Prep time: 1 minute minute
Mixing time: 1 minute minute
- 1 oz Dark Rum
- 1 oz Campari
- 1 oz sweet Vermouth
- Ice cubes
- Orange slice or twist - for garnish, optional
Old Fashioned Glass
Stirring Glass
Measuring Jigger
Stirrer or Bar Spoon
Make sure to chill an old fashioned glass.
Start by pouring 1 oz sweet Vermouth into the stirring glass.
Add 1 oz Campari.
Measure out and pour 1 oz Dark Rum into the stirring glass as well.
Fill the mixing glass with ice. Using a bar spoon or a long stirrer, stir well (for about 15-20 seconds). Give it a taste and stir a bit more if you feel like more dilution is necessary.
Replace the ice into your old fashioned glass and using the cocktail strainer, strain the drink into it over the ice.
Garnish with an orange peel (express it on top of the glass and drop it inside the glass or place it on the rim). Serve immediately.
Substitutes:
- Dark Rum: If I don't have dark rum, I can substitute white or spiced rum. The flavor profile will change slightly, but it makes a delicious cocktail.
- Campari: If Campari's bitter edge isn't my liking, Aperol is a good alternative. It's lighter but still brings that orange essence.
- Sweet Vermouth: In a pinch, dry vermouth works just fine. To balance the bitterness, try to add a small splash of simple syrup.
Making a Pitcher of Rum Negroni:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, I multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 8 oz of dark rum, 8 oz of Campari, and 8 oz of sweet vermouth.
- Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the dark rum, Campari, and sweet vermouth and stir well.
- Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled Old Fashioned glasses, garnish with an orange slice or twist, and serve immediately.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Dark Rum Substitute: use a non-alcoholic dark rum substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic rum's flavor.
- Campari Substitute: opt for a non-alcoholic aperitif or a simple syrup infused with orange peel and a touch of bitterness from gentian root or even a dash of grapefruit juice.
- Sweet vermouth: opt for a grape juice aromatized with cloves, citrus peel and ginger.
- Proceed As Usual: use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
Making it Vegan:
- Check Labels: Most spirits and liqueur are vegan-friendly. However, some brands may use animal products in their production process. Always check the labels to ensure they're vegan.
