Sip away the evening with our Rum Flip recipe! Its rich blend of dark rum, luscious cream, and sweet syrup will be your new favorite treat.
Prep time: 1 minute minute
Mixing time: 2 minutes minutes
- 1½ oz Dark Rum
- 1 whole egg
- 1 oz heavy cream
- ½ oz simple syrup
- 1 pinch nutmeg - for garnish, optional
Chill Your Glass: Place your Nick & Nora glass in the freezer to chill.
Mix Ingredients: In a cocktail shaker, combine 1 whole egg, ½ oz simple syrup, 1 oz heavy cream, and 1½ oz Dark Rum.
Shake Well: Ice up, seal the shaker and give it a vigorous shake for about 15-20 seconds.
Strain & Pour: Fine strain the mixture into your chilled glass.
Garnish: Sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg on top for garnish.
Substitutes:
- Dark Rum: I sometimes use bourbon if I run out of dark rum. It has a different flavor profile but still complements the creamy texture of the Flip. Spiced rum can also be a delightful twist.
- Heavy Cream: Half-and-half or whole milk will work if you're out of heavy cream. The drink will be a bit less creamy but still tasty. Almond milk or oat milk are my go-to dairy-free options.
- Whole Egg: You can use just the yolk for a richer texture. If you're concerned about raw egg, pasteurized egg whites from the store work too, though the texture will slightly differ.
Making a Pitcher of Rum Flip:
- Scale: For a pitcher serving 8, you'll need 12 oz of dark rum, 8 whole eggs, 8 oz of heavy cream, and 4 oz of simple syrup.
- Mix: In a large bowl or pitcher, combine all the ingredients and whisk them thoroughly.
- Serve: Pour into individual chilled Nick & Nora glasses, garnish with nutmeg, and serve immediately.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Rum Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic dark rum alternative. A few on the market mimic the molasses and caramel notes of rum.
- Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the dark rum, follow the original steps, and savor a non-alcoholic version.
Making it Vegan:
- Egg Substitute: Aquafaba (chickpea water) is a fantastic vegan alternative to egg in cocktails. Use 1 oz of aquafaba to replace the whole egg.
- Cream Substitute: For the heavy cream, almond, soy, or oat creamer works wonders. They provide a creamy consistency without the dairy.
