Equipment

  • Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

  • Add Lime Juice: Measure and pour ½ oz fresh lime juice into the glass.
  • Add Aquavit: Pour 2 oz Aquavit over the ice.

  • Garnish: Place a lime wedge or slice into the glass for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Aquavit: If you don't have Aquavit, I've used vodka as a substitute. It lacks the caraway flavor but still makes a great drink. Gin can also work if you want a different more botanical twist.
  • Ginger Beer: Ginger ale can be a milder alternative if you find ginger beer too strong. Just note that it will be less spicy.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: Bottled lime juice works in a pinch, but I always prefer fresh for its vibrant flavor.

Making a Pitcher of Nordic Mule:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Aquavit, 32 oz of ginger beer, and 4 oz of fresh lime juice.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Aquavit and fresh lime juice. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into individual ice-filled highball glasses, top them up with ginger beer, garnish with lime wedges or slices, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Aquavit Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic spirit that mimics Aquavit's flavors; these are available and do a reasonable job.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of Aquavit, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Check Ingredients: Ensure your ginger beer is vegan-friendly; some brands use animal-derived clarifying agents.
