Substitutes:
- Whiskey: If you don't have any whiskey on hand, brandy can be used as an alternative.
- Fresh Lemon Juice: I've used bottled lemon juice in a pinch, but fresh is always best. You could also try lime juice for a different citrus twist.
- Simple Syrup: Honey or agave nectar can be used as natural sweeteners if you don't have simple syrup available.
- Grenadine: If you're out of Grenadine, you can make your own by reducing pomegranate juice with sugar or you can opt for raspberry syrup.
Making a Pitcher of New York Cocktail:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of whiskey, 4 oz of fresh lemon juice, 4 oz of simple syrup, and 8 dashes of Grenadine.
- Mix: Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher with ice and stir well.
- Serve: Strain the mixture into chilled martini glasses, garnish with a lemon twist, and serve immediately.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Whiskey Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic whiskey substitute; several brands are available that mimic the flavor of whiskey quite well.
- Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular whiskey, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version of the New York Cocktail.
Making it Vegan:
- Simple Syrup: Ensure your syrup is made with sugar which is not processed with bone char.
- Grenadine: Check the label to ensure your Grenadine doesn't contain animal-derived ingredients. Some brands use natural red coloring derived from insects. If in doubt, make your own using pomegranate juice and vegan-friendly sugar.
