Notes

Substitutes:

  • Rye Whiskey: Bourbon is a great alternative if I run out of rye whiskey. It provides a sweeter profile, which some may find appealing.
  • Yellow Chartreuse: Green Chartreuse can work but has a stronger herbal punch. If you're using it, maybe dial back the quantity a touch.
  • Benedictine: If unavailable, honey syrup and a few herbal bitters can create a similar flavor.
  • Lemon Juice: Fresh is best, but high-quality bottled lemon juice can suffice in a pinch.

Making a Pitcher of Monte Cassino Cocktail:

  • Scale: For a pitcher serving 8, use 8 oz of rye whiskey, 8 oz of yellow Chartreuse, 8 oz of Benedictine, and 8 oz of lemon juice.
  • Mix & Serve: Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher with ice and mix thoroughly. Pour into chilled coupe glasses, garnish, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Rye Whiskey Substitute: Opt for non-alcoholic whiskey or a mix of apple juice with a dash of vanilla extract.
  • Yellow Chartreuse Substitute: An herbal tea infusion (like chamomile) sweetened with honey can do the trick.
  • Benedictine Substitute: A honey and herbal syrup can be a good stand-in.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic ingredients and follow the main steps.

Making it Vegan:

  • Benedictine and Yellow Chartreuse contain honey, consider using other liqueurs or a vegan-friendly herbal syrup as a substitute.
  • Always check labels on non-alcoholic substitutes to ensure no animal derivatives are used.
