Notes

Substitutes:

  • Mezcal: If you don't have Mezcal on hand, you can use tequila as a substitute. It won't have the same smoky flavor but will still make a tasty mule.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: In a pinch, bottled lime juice can work, but fresh is always best. If you're out of limes, try using lemon juice for a different twist.
  • Angostura bitters: any citrus bitters will be an interesting substitute.
  • Ginger Beer: If you're not fond of ginger beer's spiciness, use ginger ale instead. It's sweeter and less spicy but still gives that ginger kick.

Making a Pitcher of Mezcal Mule:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Mezcal, 8 oz of fresh lime juice, 16 dashes of angostura bitters, and 24 oz of ginger beer.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Mezcal, lime juice, bitters and ginger beer. Stir well.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into ice-filled copper mugs or highball glasses, garnish with a lime wheel or mint sprig, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Mezcal Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic spirit that has a smoky flavor profile. Several brands on the market mimic the flavors of traditional spirits.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular Mezcal, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

Good news! The Mezcal Mule is already vegan-friendly. Just check your ingredients' labels to ensure they don't contain any hidden animal products. Enjoy your cruelty-free cocktail!
