Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila: If you don't have Tequila, you can use vodka to make a classic Moscow Mule. If you’d like a smoky twist, Mezcal also works great in this recipe! (see “Mezcal Mule” cocktail).
  • Lime Juice: Bottled lime juice can work in a pinch if fresh limes aren't available, but fresh is always best. You could also try using fresh lemon juice for a different citrus twist.
  • Ginger Beer: If you're not fond of ginger beer's spiciness, you can substitute it with ginger ale. It's sweeter and less spicy but still gives that ginger flavor.

Making a Pitcher of Mexican Mule:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Tequila, 4 oz of lime juice, and 48 oz of ginger beer.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Tequila, lime juice, and ginger beer. Stir gently.
  • Serve: Pour the mixture into individual ice-filled copper mugs or highball glasses, garnish with a lime wheel or wedge, and serve immediately. Make sure to finish it within a few hours, while the ginger beer is still fizzy.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; several brands are available that mimic Tequila's flavor quite well. Otherwise, you can use fresh orange juice as a substitute. You can also try making your own substitute by mixing together water, a pinch of smoked salt, a splash of tonic and a bit of agave syrup (to taste).
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular ingredient, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Check Your Brands: Most tequilas are vegan, but some brands may use animal products in processing. Check Barnivore or similar resources to ensure your chosen brand is vegan-friendly.
  • Ginger Beer: Most ginger beers are vegan, but it's always best to check. Some brands might use honey or other animal-derived products.
  • Proceed As Usual: After ensuring your ingredients are vegan-friendly, follow the original steps to enjoy a delicious vegan Mexican Mule.
