Notes

Substitutes:

  • White Rum: If you're out of white rum, coconut rum can be a fantastic alternative, adding a tropical twist. I've tried it, and it adds a nice subtle coconut flavor that pairs beautifully with the pineapple.
  • Pineapple Juice: I've used muddled fresh pineapple chunks in the absence of pineapple juice. It requires more effort, but the fresh, tangy taste is undeniable.
  • Grenadine: If grenadine is unavailable, a cherry or a simple syrup mixed with a splash of pomegranate juice can suffice. I ensure it's sweet enough to balance the tartness of the pineapple.
  • Maraschino Liqueur: I've substituted this with a dash of almond extract for a nutty undertone or a cherry-flavored liqueur when in a pinch.

Making a Pitcher of Mary Pickford Cocktail:

  • Scale: For a pitcher serving 8 people, you'll need 12 oz of white rum, 12 oz of pineapple juice, 8 tsp of grenadine, and 8 tsp of maraschino liqueur.
  • Mix: Combine all these ingredients with ice in a large pitcher. If you have one that can be sealed, shake the mixture, otherwise a long spoon is perfect for stirring.
  • Serve: Serve in individual chilled cocktail glasses, garnished with maraschino cherries, and enjoy with friends!

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • White Rum Substitute: A non-alcoholic vanilla extract provides a hint of the rum's sweetness and depth, or you can use a rum-flavored syrup available in some specialty stores.
  • Maraschino Liqueur Substitute: you can easily use cherry syrup.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use the non-alcoholic substitutes and follow the original steps for a delightful, alcohol-free Mary Pickford.

Making it Vegan:

  • Grenadine/Maraschino Liqueur: Ensure the grenadine and maraschino liqueur brands don't contain animal products; some might use them as coloring agents or flavorings.
  • Maraschino Cherry: Some maraschino cherries are processed with preservatives and colorings that are not vegan-friendly. Opt for brands that specify they're vegan or use fresh cherries as a natural alternative.
