Substitutes:
- Bourbon: If you don't have bourbon, I've found that rye whiskey works well, offering a spicier kick. For a lighter option, try using brandy.
- Maple Syrup: Honey can be an alternative if you prefer a different sweetness profile. Agave syrup also works for a more neutral sweetness.
- Lemon Juice: Lime juice can substitute lemon juice for a slightly different citrus note.
Making a Pitcher of Maple Bourbon Smash:
- Scale: To make a pitcher serving 8, multiply all ingredients by 8. Use 16 oz of bourbon, 4 oz of maple syrup, and 8 oz of lemon juice.
- Mix: In a large pitcher, gently muddle 64-96 mint leaves, add the bourbon, maple syrup, and lemon juice. Stir well.
- Serve: Strain the mixture into ice-filled Old Fashioned glasses, garnish with lemon wheels or mint sprigs, and serve immediately.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Bourbon Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic whiskey alternative; these mimic the flavor without the alcohol content.
- Proceed As Usual: Replace bourbon with the non-alcoholic substitute and follow the original steps for a refreshing mocktail version.
