Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz Amaretto
  • ½ oz Triple Sec
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wheel or twist - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Margarita Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Cocktail Strainer
  • Fine strainer

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your Margarita glass with ice. Set it aside
  • Add Lime Juice: In your cocktail shaker, pour 1¼ oz fresh lime juice.
  • Add Triple Sec: Measure out and pour½ oz Triple Sec.
  • Add Amaretto: Pour 1 oz Amaretto into the shaker as well.
  • Add Tequila: Finally, add 2 oz Tequila to the mix.
  • Add Ice and Shake: Fill the shaker with ice, cap it, and give it a good shake (10-15 seconds).
  • Strain: Discard the ice inside the Margarita glass. Using both, the cocktail and fine strainer, strain the mixture into the chilled glass.
  • Garnish: Add a lime wheel or twist for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Tequila: If you're out of Tequila, use vodka as a substitute. It won't have the same flavor profile but will still make a tasty drink.
  • Amaretto: If you don't have amaretto, use a nut-flavored liqueur like Frangelico or a splash of almond extract mixed with simple syrup. Store-bought orgeat syrup can do the trick as well.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: In a pinch, bottled lime juice can work, but fresh is always best. You can also use fresh lemon juice if you have some lemons on hand.
  • Triple Sec: You can use any type of orange liqueur (Triple Sec, curaçao…) to make this cocktail. If you can’t find any, you can simply omit it and only use Amaretto. In that case, make sure to use 1 ½ ounces of Amaretto and add a dash of Orange bitters (if you have any).

Making a Pitcher of Italian Margarita:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of Tequila, 10 oz of fresh lime juice, 8 oz of amaretto, and 4 oz of orange liqueur or Triple Sec.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine all the ingredients. Add ice and stir well.
  • Serve: Strain to remove the ice, serve immediately into chilled Margarita glasses, and garnish with lime zests or wheels. Serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Tequila Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute; several brands are available that mimic Tequila's flavor. Otherwise, you can use fresh orange juice as a substitute. You can also try making your own substitute by mixing together water, a pinch of smoked salt, a splash of tonic and a bit of agave syrup (to taste).
  • Amaretto Substitute: Orgeat syrup is a very good non-alcoholic alternative to Amaretto. You can also use almond extract mixed with simple syrup for a non-alcoholic version.
  • Orange Liqueur Substitute: Opt for an orange extract mixed with a bit of simple syrup to mimic the sweet citrus flavor of Triple Sec. Orange or blood orange syrup can do the trick as well.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

The Italian Margarita cocktail is naturally vegan as it doesn't contain any animal products. Most spirits, including Tequila and Amaretto, are vegan-friendly. However, some brands may use animal products in their production process, especially if a filtration process is involved. Always check the brand's website or contact them directly to ensure their products are vegan.
