Ingredients

  • 1 oz Armagnac
  • 1 oz Averna amaro
  • ½ oz Maraschino liqueur
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon twist - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Coupe Glass
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Mixing Glass
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your Coupe Glass with ice, stir and set aside.
  • Add Averna Amaro: Measure and pour 1 oz Averna amaro into the mixing glass.
  • Add Maraschino Liqueur: Add ½ oz Maraschino liqueur to the mix.
  • Add Armagnac: Measure and pour 1 oz Armagnac.
  • Add Ice: Fill your mixing glass with ice.
  • Stir Gently: Use a bar spoon to stir the ingredients gently.
  • Strain: Strain your drink into the chilled coupe glass.
  • Garnish: Place a lemon twist into the glass for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Armagnac: If you don't have Armagnac, you can use Cognac as a substitute. I've also tried using bourbon for a different but equally delightful flavor.
  • Averna Amaro: If Averna Amaro is unavailable, try using another type like Montenegro or Nonino. They bring a slightly different herbal profile but work well.
  • Maraschino Liqueur: For a sweeter touch, you can substitute maraschino liqueur for cherry Heering or even a splash of cherry syrup.

Making a Pitcher of Intercontinental Cocktail:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 8 oz of Armagnac, 8 oz of Averna amaro, and 4 oz of maraschino liqueur.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the Armagnac, Averna amaro, and maraschino liqueur with ice. Stir well.
  • Serve: Strain the mixture into chilled coupe glasses, garnish with a lemon twist, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Armagnac Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic brandy substitute; these are available and mimic the flavor quite well.
  • Averna Amaro Substitute: To replicate the amaro's complexity, opt for a non-alcoholic herbal tonic or make a simple syrup infused with herbs and spices.
  • Maraschino Liqueur Substitute: Use cherry juice or cherry-flavored syrup for that sweet cherry note.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

All the ingredients in this recipe are typically vegan-friendly. However, always check labels to ensure no animal products are used in production processes. If you need to substitute any ingredient, ensure those alternatives are vegan-friendly.
