Ingredients

  • ¾ oz Gin - preferably London Dry
  • ¾ oz Sweet Vermouth
  • ¾ oz Dry Vermouth
  • ¼ oz pink grapefruit juice
  • 1 bar spoon Maraschino Liqueur
  • Ice cubes
  • Roasted and salted almond - served on the side (for garnish, optional)

Equipment

  • Coupe or Martini Glass
  • Shaker
  • Cocktail Strainer
  • Fine strainer
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill a Coupe or Martini glass with ice cubes. Give it a quick stir and set it aside.
  • Add Maraschino: Pour 1 bar spoon Maraschino Liqueur into the shaker.
  • Add Grapefruit Juice: Add ¼ oz pink grapefruit juice.
  • Add Vermouths: Add ¾ oz Sweet Vermouth and ¾ oz Dry Vermouth.
  • Add Gin: Finally, add ¾ oz Gin to the mix.
  • Shake Well: Fill the shaker with ice, close it and give it a good shake (10-15 seconds).
  • Strain: Take the Coupe or Martini glass and discard the ice inside. Then, using both the cocktail strainer and the fine strainer, strain the shaken drink into the ice-chilled glass.
  • Serve: Serve immediately with a few roasted & salted almonds on the side.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • London Dry Gin: If you don't have gin on hand, try using vodka for a cleaner taste. Light rum can also be used as a substitute for a sweeter flavor profile, but keep in mind that the result will be quite different from the original drink.
  • Sweet Vermouth: Any kind of red vermouth can be used for this recipe. You could also try a fortified wine like port or sherry (Oloroso, Palo Cortado, or Pedro Ximenez for example) for a different flavor profile.
  • Dry Vermouth: You can substitute dry vermouth with extra-dry vermouth or white vermouth if needed. It won't be exactly the same, but it will do in a pinch.
  • Pink Grapefruit Juice: Fresh juice is always better, but bottled juice will work in a pinch. You can also use pomelo juice as a substitute for a slightly sweeter twist on this cocktail. Fresh orange juice also works well as an alternative if you prefer a less bitter
  • Maraschino Liqueur: If you don’t have any Maraschino liqueur on hand, you can use a bar spoon of amaretto as a substitute. For a more fruity, cherry-forward alternative, cherry brandy or Maraschino syrup also work as substitutes. Just keep in mind that maraschino liqueur has a pretty unique flavor and is hard to replace, so the overall taste of your cocktail will change slightly if you choose to use any of these substitutes.

Making a Pitcher of Ideal Cocktail:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 6 oz of London dry gin, 6 oz of sweet vermouth, 6 oz of dry vermouth, 2 oz of pink grapefruit juice, and 1,5 oz of maraschino liqueur.
  • Mix: Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher. Add ice and stir well.
  • Serve: Strain to remove the ice, pour immediately into chilled Martini or coupe glasses, and serve with salted roasted almonds on the side. If you have some leftovers, be sure to keep them in the fridge (make sure no ice cubes are left inside) in an airtight container.

Making it Vegan:

All the ingredients in this recipe are typically vegan-friendly. However, always check labels to ensure no animal-derived products are used in your specific brands of gin, vermouth, and maraschino liqueur.
