Notes

Substitutes:

In my experience, you can tweak this recipe in multiple ways.
  • White Rum: If you're out of white rum, vodka serves as a good replacement. It's neutral, so it won't dominate the other flavors.
  • Dark Rum: I've used spiced rum when I ran out of dark rum. It adds a unique kick to the drink.
  • Passion Fruit Syrup: No passion fruit syrup? Try a combo of grenadine and simple syrup. It won't replicate the tropical notes but it'll still be tasty.

Making a Pitcher of Hurricane:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher serving 8, you'll need 16 oz each of white and dark rum, 8 oz of lime juice, 8 oz of orange juice, and 8 oz of passion fruit syrup.
  • Mix: Combine all these ingredients in a large pitcher and stir well.
  • Serve: Pour into individual ice-filled glasses, garnish, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Rum Substitute: Opt for non-alcoholic rum alternatives, which you can find at specialty stores.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes and follow the original steps for a non-alcoholic Hurricane.

Making it Vegan:

  • Garnish: Instead of using a cherry that might be colored with non-vegan dye, opt for fresh fruit like a slice of orange or a raspberry.
  • Verify Ingredients: Make sure your passion fruit syrup doesn't contain animal-derived additives or preservatives.
