Garnish: Garnish with an orange peel.
Substitutes:
- Whiskey: I've also used bourbon in a pinch, which adds a sweeter note.
- Sweet Vermouth: If unavailable try using port or sherry wine for a similar flavor.
- Green Chartreuse: Yellow Chartreuse can be substituted if you prefer a milder herbal taste.
- Absinthe: Pernod or another anise-flavored liqueur can replace Absinthe if needed.
Making a Pitcher of Hearn:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 8 oz of whiskey, 8 oz of sweet vermouth, and 4 oz of Green Chartreuse.
- Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Green Chartreuse with ice. Add dashes of Absinthe, Orinoco Bitters, and orange bitters to taste. Stir well.
- Serve: Strain the mixture into individual chilled coupe glasses, garnish with an orange twist, and serve immediately.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Whiskey Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic whiskey alternative; these mimic the flavor without the alcohol content.
- Vermouth Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic red wine or grape juice with a splash of balsamic vinegar for depth.
- Chartreuse Substitute: Create an herbal syrup using mint, basil, and rosemary steeped in water with sugar.
- Proceed As Usual: Use these non-alcoholic substitutes instead of the regular ingredients, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
