Notes

Substitutes:

  • White Rum: I've sometimes swapped out white Rum for aged Rum when I want a deeper flavor profile. A coconut rum can also be used for a tropical twist.
  • Maraschino Liqueur: In the absence of maraschino liqueur, a touch of almond syrup (orgeat) or cherry brandy can give a different but delightful flair.

Making a Pitcher:

  • Scale: To serve 8, you'll need 16 oz of white Rum, 8 oz of fresh lime juice, 8 tsp of granulated sugar, and 2 oz of maraschino liqueur.
  • Mix: Blend all the ingredients in a blender with 8 scoops of crushed ice.
  • Serve: Pour into individual cocktail glasses.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • White Rum Substitute: Opt for a non-alcoholic rum alternative in specialty stores. They capture the essence without the alcohol.
  • Maraschino Liqueur Substitute: Use a cherry syrup or non-alcoholic cherry flavoring.
  • Mix & Serve: Follow the original instructions using the non-alcoholic substitutes to enjoy a refreshing non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

The classic recipe is already vegan. However, always check the labels of any rum or liqueur, as some might contain non-vegan ingredients or use non-vegan processing methods. Pay attention as well to the sugar as some may have been processed with bone char.
