Ingredients

  • 2 oz White Rum
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz honey syrup - 1:1 ratio of honey to water
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wheel or twist - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Old Fashioned Glass or Clay Mug traditional for Canchánchara
  • Measuring Jigger
  • Stirrer or Bar Spoon

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Fill your Old Fashioned glass or clay mug with ice cubes.
  • Add Honey Syrup: Pour 1 oz honey syrup over the ice.
  • Add Lime Juice: Measure and pour 1 oz fresh lime juice into the glass.
  • Add Rum: Add 2 oz White Rum to the mix.
  • Stir Thoroughly: Give the ingredients a good mix with a bar spoon.
  • Garnish: Nestle a lime wheel or twist it into the glass for a touch of flair.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • White Rum: I've sometimes used aged Rum for a deeper flavor profile if I run out of white Rum. Agave nectar can replace honey syrup if you prefer its distinct sweetness.
  • Lime Juice: In a bind, I've turned to lemon juice, which provides a different but refreshing citrus kick.

Making a Pitcher of Canchánchara:

  • Scale: For a pitcher serving 8, multiply the ingredients by 8. This means you'll need 16 oz of white Rum, 8 oz of lime juice, and 8 oz of honey syrup.
  • Mix: Combine the white Rum, lime juice, and honey syrup in a large pitcher and stir until well combined.
  • Serve: Decant the mix into ice-filled glasses or clay mugs, garnish each with a lime wheel or twist, and let your guests indulge immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • White Rum Substitute: Various non-alcoholic white rum alternatives on the market capture the essence without the alcohol.
  • Proceed As Usual: Incorporate these non-alcoholic replacements instead of the regular ingredients, stick to the primary steps, and enjoy a guilt-free Canchánchara.

Making it Vegan:

  • Honey Syrup Substitute: While honey isn't universally accepted in the vegan community due to ethical concerns, you can swap it with agave nectar or maple syrup to craft it. Both options provide a delightful sweetness that pairs wonderfully with the citrus.
