Substitutes:
- Dark Rum: If you don't have dark rum, you can use light or spiced rum. The flavor profile will change slightly but still make a tasty drink.
- Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice can be used as a substitute for lime juice. It's not quite the same, but it does add a nice citrusy tang.
- Brown Sugar: White sugar or honey can be used instead if you're out of brown sugar. Keep in mind that this will alter the flavor slightly.
Making a Pitcher of Bumbo:
- Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of dark rum, 8 oz of lime juice, and 8 teaspoons of brown sugar.
- Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the dark rum, lime juice, and brown sugar. Add the spices and stir well until the sugar is dissolved.
- Serve: Strain the mixture into individual Old Fashioned glasses, garnish with lime wedge, and serve immediately.
Making it Non-Alcoholic:
- Dark Rum Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic dark rum substitute; these are available and do an excellent job of mimicking the flavor of dark rum.
- Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular dark rum, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.
Making it Vegan:
- Sugar Substitute: Ensure your brown sugar is vegan. Some brands of brown sugar are processed with bone char, which is not vegan. Look for organic or beet sugar, which are typically vegan-friendly.
- Proceed As Usual: After ensuring your ingredients are vegan, follow the original steps to enjoy a delicious vegan Bumbo drink.
