  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Strainer & Fine-strainer
  • Old Fashioned Glass
  • Measuring Jigger

Instructions

  • Prep Glass: Chill your old fashioned glass by filling it up with ice.
  • Add Brown sugar: drop 1 tsp brown sugar in a shaker.
  • Pour Lime Juice: measure and add 1 oz lime juice to the mix.
  • Add Dark Rum: measure and pour 2 oz Dark Rum.
  • Prep Shaker: Fill your cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  • Shake: Shake the ingredients vigorously until well-mixed.
  • Strain: Fine strain the mixture into the chilled Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice.
  • Add Spices: Sprinkle 1 pinch nutmeg and/or 1 pinch cinnamon on top for garnish into the shaker.
  • Garnish: Use a lime wedge as well on top for garnish.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Dark Rum: If you don't have dark rum, you can use light or spiced rum. The flavor profile will change slightly but still make a tasty drink.
  • Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice can be used as a substitute for lime juice. It's not quite the same, but it does add a nice citrusy tang.
  • Brown Sugar: White sugar or honey can be used instead if you're out of brown sugar. Keep in mind that this will alter the flavor slightly.

Making a Pitcher of Bumbo:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of dark rum, 8 oz of lime juice, and 8 teaspoons of brown sugar.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, combine the dark rum, lime juice, and brown sugar. Add the spices and stir well until the sugar is dissolved.
  • Serve: Strain the mixture into individual Old Fashioned glasses, garnish with lime wedge, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Dark Rum Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic dark rum substitute; these are available and do an excellent job of mimicking the flavor of dark rum.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular dark rum, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Sugar Substitute: Ensure your brown sugar is vegan. Some brands of brown sugar are processed with bone char, which is not vegan. Look for organic or beet sugar, which are typically vegan-friendly.
  • Proceed As Usual: After ensuring your ingredients are vegan, follow the original steps to enjoy a delicious vegan Bumbo drink.
