Ingredients

  • 2 oz Cachaça
  • ½ oz fresh lime juice
  • 4 oz Ginger Beer - to top up
  • oz simple syrup - optional, adjust to taste
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wheel or mint sprig - for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Copper Mug or Highball Glass
  • Measuring Jigger

Instructions

  • Prep Mug: Fill your copper mug or highball glass with ice cubes.
  • Add Lime Juice: Squeeze and pour ½ oz fresh lime juice into the mug.
  • Add Cachaça: Pour 2 oz Cachaça over the ice.
  • Add Ginger Beer: Top up with about 4 oz Ginger Beer.
  • Add Simple Syrup (optional): Give your cocktail a taste and add ⅓ oz simple syrup if you’d like a sweeter drink. Give it a quick stir to combine.
  • Garnish: Place a lime wheel or a mint sprig on the mug's rim for garnish and serve immediately.

Notes

Substitutes:

  • Cachaça: If you don't have cachaça, you can substitute white agricole. You can also use vodka for a classic Moscow Mule, or gold Jamaican rum for a Jamaican Mule.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: If you run out of fresh limes, bottled lime juice can work in a pinch, but it won't be as fresh-tasting. You can also use fresh lemon juice for a different citrus kick.
  • Ginger Beer: If you're not fond of ginger beer's spiciness, use ginger ale instead. It's sweeter and less spicy but still gives that ginger kick.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Cachaça Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic rum substitute; these are available and do a good job mimicking rum's flavor. If you’re feeling crafty, you can also make your own rum substitute by infusing together rooibos tea and a bunch of spices of your liking (vanilla, cinnamon, clove, allspice and banana are always a good way to start). Mix all the ingredients together, add hot water, cover and let it infuse for at least 3h (the stronger the better, so if you have time let it infuse overnight. In that case, you can either let it rest in the fridge once the liquid has cooled down). Give it a taste, adjust the spice level if necessary and strain it once you’re happy with the result. Stored properly (in an airtight container in the fridge), this “tea-rum” can be kept for up to a week.
  • Ginger Beer Substitute: Despite what its name might suggest, ginger beer is actually alcohol-free.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the cachaça, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

Most of the ingredients in a Brazilian Mule are naturally vegan. However, some brands of ginger beer may use honey as a sweetener. Check the labels and choose a brand that aligns with your dietary preferences.
