Notes

Substitutes:

  • Brandy: Bourbon makes a good substitute if you don't have brandy on hand. It changes the flavor profile slightly but still delivers a delicious cocktail.
  • Simple Syrup: If you're out of simple syrup, you can make your own by combining equal parts sugar and water and heating until the sugar dissolves. Alternatively, use honey or agave nectar for a different sweetness profile.
  • Maraschino Cherries: Fresh cherries can be used if maraschino cherries aren't available. Just remember to remove the pits!

Making a Pitcher of Brandy Cobbler:

  • Scale: To make a pitcher that serves 8, multiply all the ingredients by 8. That would be 16 oz of brandy, 4 oz of simple syrup, 24 orange slices, and 16 maraschino cherries.
  • Mix: In a large pitcher, muddle the orange slices and cherries. Add the brandy and simple syrup, then stir well.
  • Serve: Strain the mixture into individual Old Fashioned glasses filled with crushed ice, garnish with a cherry, and serve immediately.

Making it Non-Alcoholic:

  • Brandy Substitute: Use a non-alcoholic brandy substitute; these are available and reasonably mimic the brandy's flavor.
  • Proceed As Usual: Use this non-alcoholic substitute instead of the regular brandy, follow the original steps, and enjoy a non-alcoholic version.

Making it Vegan:

  • Simple Syrup: Ensure your syrup is made with vegan-friendly sugar (some sugars are processed using bone char). Alternatively, use agave nectar as a vegan sweetener.
  • Maraschino Cherries: Some brands of maraschino cherries use artificial colors or preservatives that aren't vegan-friendly. Look for organic or natural brands that don't use these ingredients.
